THE GOSPEL AMID VIOLENCE

In January 2024, Phillip Blair and the Torch of Christ Ministries team preached and distributed food in Canaan, Cité Soleil and Village de Dieu in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. In Village de Dieu, armed gang members surrounded them and controlled their movements. The team faced the danger of being kidnapped or killed.
Many people prayed for salvation in Cité Soleil. In Village de Dieu, about one or two dozen people raised their hands in response to the invitation for salvation. Phillip describes the mission as one of the most challenging ministry environments he has entered.

HOPE AFTER WAR, FAITH UNDER PRESSURE

Months after the battle for Marawi, the team visited a community of displaced Muslim families living in UNICEF tents outside the city. On the drive toward Marawi City in 2018, they bought food and packaged it for distribution. When they saw the tents, they stopped and asked whether they could share the food and goods. The families welcomed them, and Phillip was able to speak about Jesus.
The children told the team they loved them and ran after them down the road as they left. Against the backdrop of a city scarred by war, this unexpected encounter became one of Phillip’s most cherished memories of ministry. The original Marawi film preserves that moment.
CAGAYAN DE ORO: VIOLENCE DURING A PRAYER GATHERING
In a separate outreach in Cagayan de Oro, the team cooked food, preached and prayed with children, parents and other residents. During prayer for adults, Phillip prayed for a man he thought might need deliverance. He saw no apparent change, and the man walked away.
Within a minute or two, a scream interrupted the gathering. The man had drawn a large knife from the back of his waistband and stabbed another man in the head. As people fled, the attacker approached Phillip. A pastor protected him with a white plastic chair.
The man swung the knife at others before eventually leaving. Nobody else was injured. The team checked on the injured man, but Phillip received no later follow-up about his condition.
03 / EL SALVADOR
BEHIND PRISON WALLS

In 2019, Phillip preached inside an El Salvador prison during a period of severe violence and fear in the country. The message confronted something familiar on both sides of a prison wall: it is easy to hate and hard to love. Jesus calls us to love our enemies, and His call reaches even into lives shaped by hostility and violence.
Inside the prison, Phillip preached and prayed personally with men associated with MS-13, 18th Street and Mao Mao gangs. The team also distributed essential materials. Many prisoners prayed for salvation.
This photograph records a moment of personal prayer during the outreach. The original prison film was published March 2, 2019.

BEYOND THE NEIGHBORHOOD’S REPUTATION
Outside Tegucigalpa, the ministry entered a neighborhood controlled by the 18th Street gang. Phillip preached to mothers and girlfriends of gang members. The outreach brought the Gospel into the lives of people whose families and daily surroundings were affected by gang control.
The mission brought Gospel proclamation and food relief into the same community. Families were met with prayer, practical care and a call to follow Jesus Christ. About three people prayed for salvation during the outreach.

THE GOSPEL ON TIJUANA’S STREETS
Phillip, his son Jackson and two pastors preached across Tijuana, with one pastor translating into Spanish. They bought a small number of Bibles locally and gave them to people who needed them. Much of the outreach met little resistance.
One night, the team walked through the red-light district preaching and recording with a GoPro. Phillip understood that preaching and filming were not allowed there. He felt apprehensive about what might happen, but pressed forward. For him, the outreach became a spiritual breakthrough.
A separate encounter unfolded in a small market beneath an overpass. As Jackson filmed Phillip preaching, a man grabbed at the camera and came toward him. Jackson ran, and men chased him. Phillip learned that they objected to the filming and offered to delete the video.
The men accepted the offer and later apologized. The encounter ended without anyone being hurt. Phillip understood the area to be connected with cartel drug activity.

A WITNESS AT THE SANTA MUERTE SHRINE
At the Santa Muerte shrine in Tepito, Phillip and an interpreter proclaimed that eternal life is found in Jesus Christ and called people to repentance. Worshippers objected, and people at the shrine asked them to leave. As the encounter grew tense, they continued preaching while moving away through the streets.
The footage soon became a news story. UnoTV, TV Azteca and Univision reported on the encounter, and a Telediario report replayed portions of the preaching. Alongside the controversy, the message of Jesus Christ was being heard far beyond the people gathered at the shrine.
Original ministry film published August 23, 2020.
Phillip was told that nighttime news programs across Latin America were replaying long excerpts of the preaching. He believes that coverage carried the message to millions. The linked reports document the news coverage; a reliable combined audience total has not been established.
In Phillip’s account, a hit was put out on him afterward. He understands the outreach as a confrontation with spiritual darkness and an example of the cost of carrying the Gospel into difficult places.

PEOPLE OF ETERNAL WORTH
Phillip had long wanted to take the Gospel to Angeles City. He travelled with his son, an American pastor and his wife, and a team of Filipino believers. Together they preached daily in markets and on streets outside the red-light district, carrying a message of repentance, forgiveness and new life in Jesus Christ.
One night, the team walked through the red-light district with a GoPro. Women on the team spent time ministering individually to women working on the streets through conversation and prayer.
One woman was moved by the preaching and later sat with the team for an interview at McDonald’s. They encouraged her, spoke with her about Jesus and urged her to leave sex work. Their time in the city was brief, and they did not establish ongoing follow-up with her.
Every person encountered has worth beyond the circumstances of their life. The original film, I spent three days in the Philippines’ most notorious red light district, was published August 4, 2024.
The documentary includes an interview, Gospel conversation and prayer beginning around 53:23.

THE GOSPEL ACROSS INDONESIA
Across his ministry journeys in Indonesia, Phillip preached in Bali, in markets and villages around Lake Toba and Medan, and in Makassar and Jakarta. The purpose throughout was to make Jesus Christ known.
In Makassar, he preached in a market and outside a mosque. In Jakarta, the outreach included preaching outside a police station and at the National Monument, Monas.
Two separate sackcloth proclamations, at Makassar’s Center Point of Indonesia and Jakarta’s National Monument, are recorded on A Call to Repentance.

THE CALL IN THE CITY’S STREETS
Despite local warnings about entering them, Phillip preached in at least three dangerous areas of Johannesburg. The ministry’s original films document a wider series of encounters across the city, including Yeoville Market, Maboneng and Park Station.
At Yeoville Market, Torch of Christ joined local believers for preaching and prayer. People received prayer, including a man who smiled and praised God afterward. Phillip understood this as a testimony to God’s power at work in the street.

HOPE INSIDE A WOMEN’S PRISON
The ministry provided material support during two visits to a women’s prison in Londrina. In August 2024, Phillip and Bia brought hygiene kits, prayer and the Gospel. Roughly 30–40 women prayed for salvation. There were tears and confession as women knelt in prayer.
Afterward, the women asked to sing praise together. Their response is part of a wider calling to bring the hope of Jesus Christ to people behind prison walls.
FLORES DO CAMPO: A COMMUNITY GATHERED
In Flores do Campo, a favela in Londrina, the community gathered for food and worship. Alongside the prison visits, this outreach brought practical care and the message of Jesus Christ to people in the city. The original film records the gathering.
